LONDON, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Prince Philip, husband of British Queen Elizabeth II, has received a successful hip replacement surgery, Buckingham Palace said Wednesday.

The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to a hospital in central London Tuesday for the planned operation after suffering with a hip problem for about a month.

Buckingham Palace said in a short statement that the 96-year-old royal member has undergone a successful operation and "is progressing satisfactorily at this early stage".

He is "comfortable and in good spirits", and is expected to remain in the private hospital for several days, the statement said.

Prince Philip retired from royal duties last August, after decades spent supporting the Queen.

His condition came to light after his absence from the Easter service at Windsor.

BBC reported the operation comes ahead of a busy time for the royal family, with the Duchess of Cambridge due to give birth to her third child this month, and the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in May.
