MADRID, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Spanish police confirmed on Friday that they have arrested in southern Spain Dean Evans, a Dublin man wanted for the murder of dissident republican Peter Butterfly five years ago.

Evans, at 28, had a European detention order issued in his name for his role in the murder of Butterfly, considered to have been one of the leaders of the Real IRA, a splinter group from the IRA (Irish Republican Army) in March 2013.

Evans was arrested for his role in the killing, which was carried out with the help of two other people. But he and his partner disappeared two days before his trial was due to start in Dublin. He is also suspected of having carried out at least one other killing.

The arrest was carried out by members of the Spanish International Relations and Drugs Group (UDYCO) with the help of members of the Fugitive Localization Group from the Office of Judicial Police, and members of the Irish police who traveled to Spain to take part in the detention.

The south coast of Spain is home to many British and Irish residents and many other European nationals, as well as an important tourist destination which has long been used as a hideout by wanted criminals.
