YEREVAN, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Newly elected President Armen Sarkissian, a former math professor at Cambridge University, was sworn in as Armenia's fourth head of state on Monday.

The official swearing-in ceremony was held during a special session of Armenia's National Assembly, according to state-run Armenpress News Agency.

Sarkissian's inauguration marked Armenia's transition from a direct presidential system of governance to a parliamentary one after constitutional reforms were approved in a national referendum in December 2015. The parliament can elect a president with a three-quarters majority.

Sarkissian, also a former prime minister who was in office briefly from November 1996 until March 1997, was elected by a parliamentarian majority in March.

Under the new amendments, the president will hold a largely ceremonial role with real executive power lying in the hands of the prime minister.

Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan and his cabinet handed in their resignation to the new president on Monday, in accordance with the recent constitutional changes.

The nomination for the candidacy of the new prime minister will be made until April 16. April 17 will see Armenia's parliament elect a new prime minister who will then have to form a new cabinet within 15 days.
