SAN FRANCISCO, April 12 (Xinhua) -- An initiative to divide the U.S. state of California into three has received nearly double the number of signatures required to qualify for November ballot, local TV KRON4 reported Thursday.

The initiative proposed by billionaire venture capitalist Timothy Draper seeks to carve up the state into Northern California, Southern California and a new California.

Draper said on Thursday that the Cal 3 petition received "an unprecedented show of support" with more than 600,000 signatures from across the state, according to the TV report.

By Californian law, 365,880 signatures were required to qualify the initiative for a vote.

Under Draper's plan, Northern California would include 40 counties with a population of 13.3 million people who would earn a median income of 63,000 U.S. dollars.

Southern California would have 12 counties where the median income would be 45,000 dollars.

A new California, the smallest in size, would consist of the current state's central coast and Los Angeles with a median income of 53,000 dollars.

Under U.S. federal law, splitting California would require congressional approval even if the proposal is placed on state ballot.

California had a 38.54-million population by the end of 2017, the largest in the United States. It is the second most populous subnational entity in the Western Hemisphere, after Sao Paulo in Brazil.
