NEW DELHI, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Eight people were killed and many injured as a deadly storm with winds up to 104 km per hour hit India's eastern state West Bengal in the past 24 hours, official sources confirmed on Wednesday.

The storm hit the state capital Kolkata and its adjoining areas.

A large number of trees and electric poles along the roads were uprooted and traffic disrupted, said the sources. Power supply was also disrupted in a large number of storm-hit areas.

While five deaths were reported from Kolkata, two were reported from Bankura district and one from Howrah district.

Traffic was disrupted in several places as the uprooted trees fell on main roads. The local government has been pressed into service to carry out relief and rescue work.
