TRIPOLI, April 18 (Xinhua) -- General Abdarrazzaq al-Nathuri, Chief of Staff of the Libyan eastern-based army, on Wednesday survived an assassination attempt in the eastern city of Benghazi, said the army's information office.

"A car carrying a bomb was parked on roadside in the eastern entrance of the city of Benghazi, in the Sidi Khalifa district. It exploded as soon as his convoy passed by," the statement said.

The statement demanded that everyone cooperate with the security services regarding suspicious movements of sleeper cells inside and outside Benghazi.

A source of the army told Xinhua that the attack on the convoy "did not cause human casualties, but damaged some cars in the convoy."

"The explosion occurred at 3:40 p.m. local time (1340 GMT)," the source said, stressing that the "entrances and exits of Sidi Khalifa were closed so that security services can extensively search the area to ensure that no other car bombs are in the neighborhood."
