MINSK, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Belarus' gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 5.1 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2018, the National Statistical Committee of Belarus said Wednesday.

In the period from January to March, Belarus' GDP at current prices totaled 26 billion Belarusian rubles (12.76 billion U.S. dollars), the official statistics showed.

The Belarusian authorities set a target of 3.5 percent growth for 2018.

The country's GDP grew by 2.4 percent in 2017, as the government managed to reach the economic growth parameters specified by a five-year program and compensated for the lag of 2016, which saw an annual decrease of 2.6 percent.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in the April edition of its World Economic Outlook report that Belarus' economy was projected to expand by 2.8 percent in 2018.
