NEW DELHI, April 19 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in northern Indian state of Punjab Thursday sounded an alert following reports of suspicious movement, officials said.

The security has been stepped up and contingents of police and paramilitary have been deployed in Pathankot city, about 430 km north of Indian capital city of New Delhi.

"Security has been beefed up and search operations are being carried out in this frontier area after locals said they witnessed some suspicious movement near the ITI building," an official said. "But so far nothing substantive to what was said has been found."

Locals said government forces were spread out in large numbers at various locations.

Pathankot houses a prominent airbase of Indian Air Force (AIF).

In January 2016, the airbase was attacked by a group of gunmen in military fatigues, who entered the highly fortified area using gunfire and bombs, thereby engaging Indian troops for four days.

"We are on top of every issue. There is nothing to worry about it," Chief Minister of Punjab, Amarinder Singh told media on reports of suspicious movement.
