YEREVAN, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Opposition member of parliament (MP) Nikol Pashinyan, who has been leading protests that gripped Armenia's capital, has been detained, the country's police said Sunday.

He was detained along with other fellow MPs, said a statement released by the police, for carrying out "an illegal protest march."

Pashinyan has been leading 10 consecutive days of protests in Yerevan, aiming at blocking former president Serzh Sargsyan's return to power in the new role of prime minister. Sargsyan was elected Tuesday by the National Assembly as Armenian prime minister.

Police in Armenia have repeatedly announced that the protests were taking place in violation of a number of administrative rules and public order.
