ROME, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Several machine guns and heavy weapons were seized from a Bosnian man arrested by Italian police, local media reported on Tuesday.

The man, 52, was stopped at a check-point while driving along a highway near the northeast city of Gorizia, close to the Italian border with Slovenia.

In his car, police found at least six AK-47s (or Kalashnikovs), two Skorpion machine pistols, and one rifle, along with ammunition and other firearm components, according to Ansa news agency.

The operation was carried out last Friday by Italy's military police Carabinieri in Gorizia, which activated an Interpol firearms trafficking protocol on suspicion of international terrorism after the arrest.

The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was driving a car with a Swiss number plate.

Searching the vehicle, police recovered some items that would be subjected to further investigation, including a receipt from a club in Slovenia's capital Ljubljana, and a sketched journey map towards Barcelona, La Repubblica newspaper reported.

Such findings would suggest the final destination of the weapon load might have been Spain.
