BERLIN, April 24 (Xinhua) -- The former chief executive officer of the insurance company Munich Re, Nikolaus von Bombard, will assume the position of board chairman at Deutsche Post-DHL Group, the Bonn-based postal service provider confirmed on Tuesday.

Speaking at Deutsche Post-DHL's Annual General Meeting (AGM), CEO Frank Appel told shareholders that the long-standing 71-year-old chairman Wulf von Schimmelmann would leave the company at the end of his current regular term.

Von Bombard is expected to be formally confirmed as Schimmelmann's successor at the first session of the new supervisory board.

"With a calm hand, deep understanding and a pioneering spirit, Wulf von Schimmelmann has always provided important impulses," Appel praised the departing chairman. The CEO highlighted that strong earnings figures recorded at Deutsche-Post DHL in recent years owed much to the confident stewardship of von Schimmelmann who first joined the supervisory board in 2007.

Appel expressed satisfaction that revenue had increased across all divisions of Deutsche Post-DHL Group in 2017, including its relatively poor-performing Supply Chain and Global Forwarding businesses.

Total revenue grew by 5.4 percent to 60.4 billion euros (73.9 billion U.S. dollars) in 2017, not least thanks to a booming e-commerce division. Annual earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose by 7.2 percent to 3.74 billion euros.

Deutsche Post-DHL Group emphasized that it would continue to invest in its package-, express businesses as well as digitalization.

Responding to questions from shareholders at the AGM, Appel was unable to "comment in any form" on rumors that Deutsche Post-DHL was considering an initial public offering (IPO) for its e-mobility unit. The CEO merely stated that he was convinced that the development of in-house car manufacturing would contribute positively to the achievement of wider corporate targets.
