TIRANA, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Unemployment benefits in Albania in 2017 were nearly halved, with the government paying out only 536 million Albanian lek (5 million U.S. dollars) compared to the 1 billion lek it spent in 2016, according to the National Employment Service (NES).

According to official NES data, the number of people registered as unemployed fell to 2,000 from the 3,700 that were receiving unemployment benefits in 2016.

The number of people receiving benefits is the lowest since 2000, when the highest number of social assistance recipients was registered at around 21,900 people.

The number of beneficiaries has progressively declined from year to year, while the unemployment benefit fund is the lowest in 20 years. The national unemployment in 2017 was 13.6 percent from 14.7 percent in 2016.

In March 2016, Albania made changes to its unemployment program, aiming to raise the base level of unemployment income from 6,850 lek (around 65 U.S. dollars) per month to 11,000 lek (around 104 U.S. dollars) per month.
