JAKARTA, April 26 (Xinhua) --- Firefighters have extinguished an oil well fire that killed 21 people in Aceh province of western Indonesia, but gas remains coming out from the oil source.
Spokesman of national disaster management agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that the fire was stopped at 05:00 a.m. Jakarta time Thursday (1000 GMT Wednesday), however gas is still spreading outside from the well.
Besides killing the 21 villagers, the fire which started Tuesday also seriously wounded 38 people and forced a total of 198 living near the traditional well flying home and taking shelters for their safety, Sutopo told Xinhua in a text message.
All the injured are being treated in three hospitals in the province, he added.
The illegal oil well situated in Pasir Putih village of Aceh Timur district caught fire on Tuesday.
