CAIRO, April 26 (Xinhua) -- The weather is expected to clear up in the Egyptian capital Cairo and several other provinces nationwide as a wave of two-day heavy rains has come to an end, the spokesman of the country's meteorological authority told Xinhua on Thursday.

"The wave of heavy rains has completely ended in Cairo, the western coasts, the northern provinces and the north and south of Upper Egypt," said Wahid Saudi, media spokesman of the Egyptian Meteorological Authority.

"It will continue in the cities and provinces of North and South Sinai until Friday afternoon," he added.

The two-day heavy downpours that started late Tuesday flooded some roads in Cairo and nearby Giza provinces as well as the classy New Cairo's Fifth Settlement area, causing leaky ceilings, power cuts and property damages in some places.

The meteorological authority's spokesman explained that the heavy rains have been caused by a low air depression centralized over the Red Sea level, which brought southeastern winds that were high in temperature and completely saturated with water vapor.

"The low air depression coincided with another one in the upper air layers, between 5.5 and 6 kms high, which led to multiplication of low, thunderous clouds and hence the heavy rains," Saudi told Xinhua.

On Thursday, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi expressed understanding of the sufferings of citizens due to the damages caused by such a bad weather.

"I affirm that the state with all its authorities will intensify efforts to avoid the recurrence of such consequences," the Egyptian newly re-elected president posted on his official Facebook page.

In late 2015, the governor of Alexandria province was sacked for not being prepared for seasonal floods that caused several damages and deaths in the coastal, Mediterranean province.
