TOKYO, April 30 (Xinhua) -- A 28-year-old male worker was killed in an explosion at a steel plant in southwestern Japan, local authorities said Monday.

The blast occurred at around 11:00 p.m. local time on Sunday in the basement of Kyushu Steel Corp.'s plant in Takeo, Saga Prefecture, local police said.

There were 10 staff working at the plant when the blast occurred. A 45-year old worker suffered burns while attempting to save the victim.

There were no other injuries as a result of the explosion, local police officials said.

Rescue officials said the victim went to investigate the source of smoke coming from the basement area when he was fatally caught in the explosion.

They said a hose leaking oxygen in a machine room in the basement may have been the cause of a fire which led to the explosion.
