VIENNA, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Austrian airports have seen a 4.5 percent increase in passenger numbers in 2017 with the total reaching about 29 million, Statistics Austria has revealed on Monday.

The total passenger numbers, which include transit passengers, increased in four of the country's six major airports, with only those in Linz and Graz recording decreases.

The Vienna International Airport, by far the busiest, saw a 4.5 percent increase or about one million passengers more, to see passenger numbers climb to 24.39 million.

Salzburg (up 8.7 percent), Innsbruck (up 8.5 percent) and Klagenfurt (up 11.9 percent) also saw notable increases.

The statistics office said that of the 14.4 million outbound passengers, 82.2 percent were headed for another European destination.

A further 9.8 percent traveled to Asia, 5.4 percent to the United States, and 2.4 percent to Africa.

While passenger numbers increased, it was noted that the number of plane arrivals and departures remained relatively unchanged on 281,585. This was due to there having been an average of 102.8 passengers per flight in 2017, which was 4.5 percent more than the 98.4 passengers per flight the year prior.
