NEW DELHI, May 4 (Xinhua) -- In a kind and rare gesture, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi gifted a gold-coloured garland to a research scholar after the latter asked for it through a tweet.

Rabesh Kumar Singh (28), a research scholar in the Indian School of Mines at the premier Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) located in eastern state of Jharkhand, had tweeted to the PM on April 24 telling him that he liked the garland which he (Modi) wore at a public event in central state of Madhya Pradesh, and could he get the same as a gift.

The very next day, the scholar, to his utter surprise, got a phone call from the Prime Minister's office asking for his address where the garland could be sent as a parcel.

Speaking to Xinhua, Rabesh Kumar said, "It was a pleasant surprise to get a gift from a person holding such a high constitutional post, our country's prime minister. This gesture from him shows that he is so generous. I am really obliged by our PM's gesture."

He added: "The other day I was watching the PM speaking live on TV at a public event. He was wearing a gold-coloured garland which I liked very much. And, very casually, without thinking that I would actually get it, I tweeted to our PM - "I was listening to you on Panchayati Raj Day; you gave a very nice speech. I liked the gold-coloured garland you were wearing. Can I get the same?"

According to Rabesh Kumar, the gold-coloured garland is made by hand by the tribal people of Mandla in Madhya Pradesh.

In a swift response, the next day Prime Minister Modi sent the same garland to Rabesh Kumar along with a letter saying "I read your message on Twitter where you expressed your liking for the garland I wore at Mandla on Panchayati Raj Diwas. I am sending you a letter along with the garland as a gift. I wish you all the best for the future."
