KIEV, May 8 (Xinhua) -- A total of 3,332 Ukrainian army soldiers have died in the conflict-stricken region of Donbas in eastern Ukraine during the past four years, the country's Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak said on Tuesday.
At least 2,394 servicemen have fallen victim to the ongoing hostility with pro-independence rebels, while 938 others were killed due to the violation of safety rules, illnesses, road accidents and other non-combat causes, Poltorak told local reporters, according to his press service.
The Defense Ministry said earlier that more than 9,990 Ukrainian servicemen were injured in the region.
The conflict started in April 2014 after the government launched offensives to regain control over the cities and towns seized by insurgents, who declared independence from Kiev.
The confrontation has killed more than 10,000 civilians and soldiers from both sides and left about 24,000 other people injured.
