RAMALLAH, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian Prisoners Club (PPC) said Thursday that Israeli police arrested a member of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah Party and his wife in Jerusalem.

Adnan Ghaith, a member of Fatah's revolutionary council, was arrested from his home in East Jerusalem town of Silwan along with his wife, said a statement by the PPC.

The PPC considered the move "a part of the Israeli policy aiming at undermining the Palestinian existence in Jerusalem, and part of the terrorism practiced against Palestinians."

"Israel's policy of arrests and deportation from Jerusalem will only increase Palestinians' resilience and holding on to their rights in the city, to protect the holy Islamic and Christian sites," said the statement.

No Israeli source was available to comment on the issue.

The Israeli army carries out arrest campaigns on an almost daily basis throughout the West Bank, which it says is aimed at "arresting wanted Palestinians," while Palestinians say they are often arbitrary and violent and target civilians.

Meanwhile, dozens of Palestinians protested in West Bank city of Bethlehem, marching towards the Har Homa settlement built on mount Abu Ghuneim to the northeast of the city, in commemoration of the Palestinian catastrophe or Nakba of 1948.

Palestinian sources said that the Israeli forces threw gas and sound bombs towards protestors who were shouting slogans, singing nationalistic songs and raising the Palestinian flag.

The sources said that several people were suffocated due to tear gas inhalation and were treated by medics on location.

The catastrophe or "Nakba" for the Palestinian people is marked on May 15 each year, in memory of the forcible transfer of two thirds of the Palestinian people and ethnic cleansing of at least 418 villages as a result of the 1948 war.
