MADRID, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Catalan separatist candidate Quim Torra was on Monday elected as the new leader of northeast Spain's Catalan region following the second investiture debate in 48 hours.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy reacted to the news by commenting that the Spanish central government "would look for understanding, but would guarantee the law and the Spanish Constitution and other judicial orders are fulfilled."

Torra was elected by 66 votes to 65 with four abstentions in the Catalan parliament.

Torra is the fourth separatist candidate to lead the Catalan regional assembly after attempts to invest Jordi Turull and Jordi Sanchez failed as they are currently in prison, while former leader Carles Puigdemont is in Germany now.

The Catalan region now finally has a leader after the Spanish government suspended the region's autonomy and sacked the Puigdmont's government in the wake of the October 2017 independence referendum, which was declared illegal by the Spanish Constitutional Court.

The Catalan elections held in December 2017 came with pro-independence parties again winning a majority in the Catalan assembly.
