WASHINGTON, May 14 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump visited his wife, Melania Trump, at a military hospital near D.C. Monday evening, after the first lady underwent a procedure to treat a benign kidney condition earlier in the day.
"Successful procedure, she is in good spirits. Thank you to all of the well-wishers!" Trump said in a tweet before flying by helicopter from the White House to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, state of Maryland.
Mrs. Trump's office said earlier in a statement that the first lady "underwent an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney condition."
"The procedure was successful and there were no complications," the statement said. "The first lady looks forward to a full recovery."
An embolization is a minimally invasive treatment that blocks one or more blood vessels or abnormal vascular channels.
The president and first lady spoke before the procedure and he spoke to the doctor immediately following it, according to ABC News, citing a senior administration official.
The first lady, 48, will likely remain hospitalized "for the duration of the week," the statement added.
Mrs. Trump was last seen in public on Wednesday at a White House event to honor military mothers and spouses.
Her expected multi-day hospitalization would be the longest for a first lady since Nancy Reagan stayed for roughly a week in a hospital following a mastectomy in 1987.
