SINGAPORE, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Singapore should come up with more efforts to tackle inequality by developing more pathways in the education and training systems, the city-state's Education Minister Ong Ye Kung told the parliament here Tuesday.
Highlighting the issue which may dampen national cohesiveness among the citizens, Ong invited people to put forward their suggestions on how to solve the issue.
"From the multitude of voices, we will discern that singularity of action, a choice that is right for Singapore, and one which we must explain well, persuade people and be able to defend well publicly," he said.
Inequality ranked high in the first two days of the parliamentary debate over Singaporean President Halimah Yacob's speech starting Monday. She had pinpointed in the address delivered at the parliament last week that inequality was a problem that needs to be dealt with "vigorously".
Singaporean government has planned to boost pre-school education in fighting against inequality, which Ong believed, will bear fruit in the years to come.
However, he cautioned against the resorting to universal welfare in coping with the problems including inequality.
According to him, it's better to enable people to help themselves.
