WASHINGTON, May 15 (Xinhua) -- At least two people have been killed by extreme weather that hit Northeast United States Tuesday.

A man was killed when a tree crushed his truck in the state of Connecticut, according to the mayor of Danbury Mark Boughton, while a 11-year-old New York girl died in a similar incident.

Boughton told local residence to stay inside until the torrential rain and hail abated.

Several counties in New York state were declared to be in a state of emergency, and the National Guard has been mobilized to remove fallen trees and repair the power grid.

More than 130,000 customers have reportedly lost power due to the storm, and scores of flights in and out of the region have been canceled.
