CHICAGO, May 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. police shot and arrested a gunman on Wednesday at a high school in the state of Illinois, local media reported.

No students or staff were injured during the exchange of fire, officials said.

TV channel WGN9 reported that the incident happened about 8 a.m. local time (1300 GMT) inside a high school in Dixon city, some 165 km west of Chicago.

A "male suspect" opened fire on an officer at the school, firing multiple rounds, officials said. The officer fired back, striking the gunman.

The wounded suspect, described as a teen or young adult, was taken into custody. But officials do not think the shooter was a current student.

Local police believe the suspect acted alone, and his motive is under investigation.
