DHAKA, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Drivers have been stuck in parts of Bangladesh's main transportation artery, the Dhaka-Chattogram-highway.

The tailback, that again reportedly ensued Wednesday night stretched from Dhaka's Jatrabari area to Chandina area in Cumilla district, some 96 km east of the capital city, was triggered by construction works, rain and numerous potholes.

Because of the long snarl-ups, people and businesses using the highway had suffered immensely last week when 110km-long tailback persisted on the highway for almost five days.

Construction of a rail overpass in the country's Feni district, some 149 km southeast of capital Dhaka, has largely contributed to the congestion.

Authorities on Tuesday opened one lane of the overpass for vehicular movement from Chattogram side to Dhaka, helping reduce congestion in parts of Feni although there is still traffic on the Cumilla part.

With daily traffic of around 30,000, the four-lane Dhaka-Chattogram Highway is a main transportation artery in Bangladesh between Dhaka and seaport city Chattogram, some 242 km southeast of capital Dhaka.

The highway forms a critical component of the proposed Asian Highway Network route AH41 and the Central-South-East Asian economic corridor.
