CHICAGO, May 17 (Xinhua) -- A former student who fired shots inside a U.S. high school has been charged with three felonies, the Illinois State Police announced late Wednesday.

Police identified the 19-year-old gunman as Matthew A. Milby, who was shot and arrested on Wednesday morning by a policeman at Dixon High School, some 165 kilometers west of Chicago.

Thanks to the successful police intervention, no students or staff were injured during the incident.

The State Attorney's local office has approved three charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm, all class X felonies in Illinois, with a two million U.S. dollar bond against Milby.

The suspect is currently being treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries under police surveillance, officials said.

Milby fired multiple rounds near the school's gym, where senior students were gathering for graduation practice. The police officer at the school, Mark Dallas, fired back and wounded the gunman.

Dallas was praised as a hero who saved many lives at the school.

"We should all be very thankful to school resource officer Mark Dallas for his bravery and quick action to immediately diffuse a dangerous situation at Dixon High School," tweeted Illinois governor Bruce Rauner.

An investigation is still underway into the motive of the shooting while the suspect's mother told local media that her son was ostracized at school and expelled from football team for smoking weed.
