HOUSTON, May 18 (Xinhua) -- A shooter opened fire inside Santa Fe High School, southeast of Houston, Texas, the United States on Friday morning, causing multiple fatalities, federal and county officials told local media.

Ambulances and helicopters were seen on the scene, transporting multiple injured people, including students and a police officer, to a nearby hospital. Some of the injured were in critical conditions.

The incident happened at Santa Fe High School, Galveston County, about 54 km southeast of downtown Houston. Santa Fe is a city with a population of about 13,000.

Local police took a person into custody. Law enforcement officials said the shooter appeared to be a student.

The school was on lockdown, and students were being relocated to another location to meet their families as law enforcement personnel were working to secure the school building, said a statement issued by the district.

The county is about 360 km east of Sutherland Springs, Texas, where a gunman barged into a church last November and murdered 26 people.
