JERSUALEM, May 18 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli police said Friday that the first Friday prayer services of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan ended peacefully at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Israeli police said about 90,000 attended prayers at the holy site on the second day and the first Friday of Ramadan.

Israeli security forces are on high alert for the Muslim fasting month this year at a time when tensions are heightened along the Israel-Gaza Strip border.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said approximately 40,000 Palestinians went through different crossings from Judea and Samaria to Jerusalem as part of the Ramadan prayers.

Another 6,000 Palestinians prayed at the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron on Friday, said the Israeli army.

The IDF added that the head of the central command, Nadav Padan, and other senior commanders in the West Bank tour the Rachel and Qalandiya crossings.

"There have been no unusual events," said the IDF.

IDF troops are prepared and reinforced, along with the Israel Security Authority, civil administration, border police and Israeli police forces in order to "enable the Ramadan prayers alongside protecting the communities and routes and maintaining order and security," said the Israeli army.

Israeli fire killed about 60 Palestinians at a mass rally along the Gaza Strip border on Monday, as the inauguration ceremony of the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem was held.
