BRUSSELS, May 18 (Xinhua) -- A two-year-old migrant girl was found dead in a van carrying 30 Kurdish migrants which was chased by police for an hour in southern Belgium, the RTBF quoted the autopsy as reporting on Friday.

The girl died Thursday morning from a gunshot wound in the vehicle with migrants.

The chase began on the E42 motorway outside the town of Namur, reported the Belgian newspaper "La DH". At the end of the chase between Namur and Mons, the vehicle was blocked after shots from the police. There is no indication at this point that the child was shot by the police.

It took 15 police cars and some 30 police officers to bring the incident to an end at around 3 a.m. on Thursday.

Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon lamented the incident and stressed the dangers of human trafficking.

"Tragic event with dramatic consequences. The investigation is in progress. This event again highlights the sad circumstances in which human trafficking flourishes", he wrote Thursday on twitter.

"The first report prepared by the emergency services was misleading: it established that a head trauma was the cause of the death, but the autopsy found that a lost bullet was the cause of death", said a spokesperson at the Tournai prosecutor's office.

The case is under investigation in Mons for intentional homicide, with possible non-assistance to persons in danger, malicious interference with traffic and armed rebellion.

Hours after the incident on Thursday, a group of some 60 migrants reacted by blocking a motorway near Dunkirk, France.

Migrants staying at the nearby Grande-Synthe camp had known the girl who had died as she was part of a family who had been staying in the gym, said French police.
