TIRANA, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Albanians spend longer time at work compared to other European citizens, up to 48 hours a week, a poll conducted by the European Commission (EC) showed.

According to the Chairman of the Albanian Syndicates Kole Nikolla, there is a connection between productivity and pay.

"Albanians work longer hours, but the productivity is lower. Of course, payments are lower. It's a vicious circle," Nikolla said.

Albanian state institutions, said Nikolla, must inspect the market and verify syndicates and their roles, since workers in Albania are still unrepresented,

"We don't have basic laws, such as collective contracts, which are basic for discussing working hours, better conditions, productivity, etc," added Nikolla.

According to the EC study, Albanians are followed by Serbs and Turks, who work 47 hours a week. In developed countries such as Germany and Netherlands, citizens work on average 40 hours.

Meanwhile, according to Albanian National Institute of Statistics, in Albania, a citizen works on an average of 409 hours a year more than developed European countries.
