Two BiH police officers severely injured during prevention of car robbery

SARAJEVO, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Two police officers were severely injured while preventing three persons from stealing a car on early Tuesday morning in Bosnia and Herzegovina's (BiH) capital Sarajevo.

During the prevention of a serious offense of stealing a motor vehicle of Skoda Oktavia brand, three masked persons fired several times at policemen, Ministry of Internal Affairs of Canton Sarajevo (MUPKS) told to local media.

"In an attempt to protect themselves from the immediate threat of death, police officers returned with fire on perpetrators, after which unknown persons escaped by driving a motor vehicle of Audi brand and unknown plates, hitting two police officers and causing severe bodily injuries," MUPKS said.

The policemen were transferred to a local hospital, where one of them was left for further treatment and other was dismissed to home treatment.

Further investigation on identification and finding of perpetrators is under way.

According to BiH Ministry of Internal Affairs, 898 cars were stolen in 2017, mainly of Volkswagen brand.
