MADRID, May 22 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish treasury placed on Tuesday treasury bills valued at 1.95 billion euros (2.29 billion U.S. dollars) on the market at negative interest rates.
A total of 1.22 billion euros worth of nine-month treasury bills carried an average interest rate of -0.39 percent, the treasury reported.
The remaining 730 million euros worth of three-month treasury bills fetched an average interest rate of -0.5 percent.
After this auction, the treasury will hold another one on Thursday when it will place treasury bonds on the market. (1 euro = 1.18 U.S. dollars)
