PARIS, May 24 (Xinhua) -- South Korean promising tennis star Chung Hyeon was forced to withdraw from the 2018 French Open due to an ankle injury that has dogged him throughout the clay season.

Chung, 22, was expected to play a warm-up tournament in French city of Lyon prior to Roland Garros, but withdrew from it due to the injury.

"Unfortunately I had to withdraw from Lyon yesterday and now Roland Garros," Chung tweeted late on Wednesday.

"I have been struggling with an ankle injury during the entire clay season," he added.

Chung said that an MRI scan has revealed a build up of fluid in his ankle joint which might require a small procedure and then an extended period of rest.

"Thanks to everyone for all the support. Hope to see you soon and be back to full strength," Chung wrote.

Chung shocked many people as he made into the last four in men's singles of the 2018 Australian Open, but quit his semifinal against Roger Federer after sustaining a foot blister.
