CANBERRA, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) confirmed on Thursday evening that at least 40,000 people across Australia simultaneously stargazed through telescopes for 10 minutes on Wednesday night, setting a new Guinness World Record title for "most people stargazing at multiple venues."

The exact number that helped to win the record is still being counted due to the overwhelming number of participants.

The previous record was set in August 2015 in Australia, when 7,960 people from 37 places did star-gazing at the same time.

The event was co-organized by Australian National University (ANU) and Australian Broadcasting Corportation (ABC).

With more than 285 stargazing parties registered across the country, thousands of people looked through a telescope or a pair of binoculars for 10 minutes, starting from 8:40 p.m. local time on Wednesday.
