WASHINGTON, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The White House said on Saturday that a preparation team for a possible meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s top leader Kim Jong Un will leave for Singapore as scheduled.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that "the White House pre-advance team for Singapore will leave as scheduled in order to prepare should the summit take place."

Trump said on Friday that the United States could still meet with Kim as planned on June 12 in Singapore.

Trump tweeted that "we are having very productive talks with North Korea about reinstating the Summit which, if it does happen, will likely remain in Singapore on the same date, June 12th."

He added that if necessary, the meeting "will be extended beyond that date."

Trump had called off the meeting on Thursday before backtracking a day later, saying the summit could still take place.

Should the summit take place, it would be the first time for a sitting U.S. president to meet a DPRK leader.
