BiH major party elects its candidate for upcoming general elections

SARAJEVO, May 26 (Xinhua)-- Bosnia and Herzegovina's (BiH) main Bosniak party, the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) elected its veteran member Sefik Dzaferovic as the candidate for member of BiH tripartite presidency at upcoming general election here on Saturday afternoon.

At the Convention that marked 28 years of party's existence, Chairman of BiH Presidency and President of SDA Bakir Izetbegovic announced the economic and political goals the party aims to fulfill until 2026.

After the secret ballot of 213 members of party's major boards, Dzaferovic had 104 votes, while his rival Safet Softic had 87 votes. The rest, 22 votes, were invalid.

After the voting, Dzaferovic addressed the members by saying that he is honored because he has gained the most trust by the party members, and added that it is a great obligation and responsibility.

"We will succeed because we are a team, and this is the only way to success," Dzaferovic said,adding that SDA party will continue to work hard for BiH's accession to the European Union (EU) and NATO.

Sefik Dzaferovic, 61, is an incumbent vice-president of House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of BiH and for the last 22 years, he has been engaged in politics. Dzaferovic will run as a Bosniak candidate for member of BiH tripartite presidency, which represents the three major ethnic groups of Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats.

BiH will hold its general election on Oct. 7, 2018, the Central Election Commission (CIK) announced earlier this month.
