Russian PM to visit Tajikistan for CIS session

MOSCOW, May 28 (Xinhua) -- The Russian government said Monday that Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will pay an official visit to Tajikistan Tuesday and attend a meeting of the Russia-led Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Wednesday.

Medvedev will meet Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and Prime Minister Kohir Rasulzoda on cooperation in trade, economy, investment, energy, transportation, agriculture, migration and humanitarian fields, with the signing of documents following their talks.

He will attend a session of the CIS Council of Heads of Government in the Tajik capital of Dushanbe, where the CIS leaders will exchange views on the current state and prospects of economic cooperation.

They will also discuss progress in negotiations for free trade in services within the CIS, innovation cooperation, intellectual property market, cooperation in customs affairs, education and youth policy.

The CIS was founded in 1991 as a regional association of former Soviet republics. Its members comprise of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Ukraine and Turkmenistan are associate members of the organization.

Last month, Ukraine started the procedure to withdraw from the management bodies of the CIS following years of disputes with Russia.
