Kenyan bourse turnover rises amid local investors' vibrant trading

NAIROBI, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Equity turnover at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) went up on Monday as share prices rose across various counters.

Turnover stood at 7.3 million dollars on a volume of 35 million shares from 42 million shares worth 6.8 million dollars at the end of last week boosted by local investors vibrant trading.

Some of the shares that rose to lift the turnover were National Bank (6.8 percent), Mumias Sugar (7.1 percent), Carbacid (8.3 percent) and Express Kenya (9.4 percent), among others.

The NSE benchmark index declined further on Monday after crossing below the 3,400 mark on Friday. The index closed at 3,344.8-8 from 3,364.58 on Friday last week.

On the other hand, the NSE All Share Index declined to close at 174.73 from 175.37 in the previous session while the 25 Share Index similarly dipped to 4,515.35 from 4,517.36.

The top traded stocks were Cooperative Bank (17.2 million) shares, Athi River Mining (7.5 million), Kenya Power (2.7 percent), Safaricom (2.1 million) and Standard Chartered Bank (1.2 million) Enditem
