GENEVA, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Switzerland's Energy Ministry said Tuesday it aims to increase the proportion of new electric vehicle registration from the current 2.7 percent to 15 percent by 2022.

The ministry has released a roadmap for the promotion of electric vehicles and the government said it will continue to support the expansion of the recharging network infrastructure within Switzerland.

At the invitation of Energy Minister Doris Leuthard, a delegation from the electric mobility sector met on Monday in a roundtable with government representatives, the Swiss cantons, and cities to define how to increase the share of electric vehicles.

"All agreed to jointly establish a roadmap in the coming months, which will aim to increase the share of electric vehicles in new registrations to 15 percent by 2022," the ministry said in a statement.

It said electric vehicles make an important contribution to achieving Swiss energy and climate goals.

The ministry noted that the Association of Swiss Car Importers recently announced that it wants to ensure that the share of electric vehicles in new registrations reaches 10 percent by 2020.

Under the SwissEnergy program, Switzerland plans to finance awareness-raising campaigns on electric mobility targeting local municipalities and the broader public.

Several cantons and municipalities have already embraced this technology.

For example, it is already possible to recharge electric vehicles all over Switzerland in both public and private car parks, the ministry said.
