NEW DELHI, May 30 (Xinhua) -- India's rights panel - National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) would be sending its fact-finding team to probe the death of civilians in police firing during protests against the Sterlite copper unit in southern Tamil Nadu, officials said Wednesday.

The move comes days after the Delhi high court left it to NHRC to decide on a lawyer's representation for an independent probe into the deaths.

"The NHRC team would leave forthwith and examine all the concerned including family members of the victims and independent witnesses as it deems appropriate and submit a report to the Commission within two weeks," an official of the rights panel said.

According to officials, the commission has asked its Director General (Investigation) to depute a team headed by an officer not below the rank of senior superintendent of Police assisted by three more officers of the rank of deputy superintendent of Police and Inspectors from its investigation.

Last week, 13 people were killed and many injured in police firing in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin during protests demanding closure of the Sterlite copper smelting plant.
