PRAGUE, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Czech police on Wednesday wounded and arrested a man, who holed up in a flat in the eastern city of Ostrava and threatened to activate an explosive device.

According to the chief of Moravian-Silesian police Tomas Kuzel, the standoff between the 44-year-old man and police involved around 100 policemen, including SWAT team, deminers, firefighters and led to an evacuation of about 50 people from the nearby houses.

The standoff ended up with the captive of the man, who was wounded by the police on his leg.

Some media reports say the man could be a former police officer.

The family members of the man contacted police on Wednesday morning as they worried that the man had not left the flat for over a month.

Through the window, it was seen that the man was alive and had a sort of an explosive system inside the home.

Police then started the negotiations, which came to a dead-end. The man aimed his gun at officers, but got shot first by one of the policemen.

Due to the risk of explosion, police SWAT team and deminer entered the house and detained the man.

"He is in the care of doctors," Kuzel said.

The police halted traffic in the surroundings of the block where the flat situated following the incident.

Traffic resumed shortly after 1:30 p.m. after a complete inspection of the building carried out by bomb-disposal experts.
