SEOUL, June 1 (Xinhua) -- South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha on Friday held talks over the phone with her European Union (EU) counterpart to discuss the Korean Peninsula situation, Seoul's foreign ministry said.

Kang held a phone conversation with Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, for 15 minutes earlier in the day at the request of the EU side, according to the Seoul ministry.

Kang and Mogherini exchanged opinions on recent situations on the peninsula, where detente emerged following the two inter-Korean summits on April 27 and May 26 each at the border village of Panmunjom.

Kang briefed Mogherini on situations surrounding the possible summit between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States, asking for the EU's continued support for and interest in the ongoing talks to denuclearize the peninsula and build permanent peace.

Negotiations were underway between Pyongyang and Washington to hold the first-ever DPRK-U.S. summit between top DPRK leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump, expected to be held in Singapore on June 12.

During the phone talks, Mogherini assessed South Korea's efforts to improve inter-Korean relations, make a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula and build peace, saying the EU will give a full support for such efforts and play a necessary role for it.
