7 killed, 7 injured in truck-tractor collision in India

NEW DELHI, June 5 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and seven others injured in a collision between a dumper truck and a tractor in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said Tuesday.

The accident took place on Bilgram Kannauj road near Mallawan in Hardoi district, about 97 km northwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"Late last night in a tragic road accident here seven labourers were killed and seven others were injured when a dumper truck collided with a tractor," a police official posted in Hardoi said.

"The labourers working as construction workers were travelling in trolley of the tractor. They had a concrete mixer attached to the tractor as well."

The injured were admitted in neighbouring Kannauj district hospital, said the police.

The victims are said to be locals.

Police have registered a case and ordered investigations into the accident.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

Officials say on an average over 400 deaths take place every day in India due to road accidents.
