ZAGREB, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) decided on Monday to dismiss the party's political secretary Davor Ivo Stier and international relations secretary Mirko Kovac.

The two senior officials were sacked from their posts after they criticized party policy under the leadership of the prime minister and party president Andrej Plenkovic.

"I no longer have confidence in the two former HDZ secretaries," Plenkovic said after the party's presidency session.

The party's presidency selected the minister for public administration Lovro Kuscevic to be a new political secretary, while Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic is named new international relations secretary.

Stier and Kovac are former Croatian foreign ministers and prominent members of the ruling party. Kovac was the minister for ten months in the government led by the former prime minister Tihomir Oreskovic.

Stier became a foreign minister in October 2016 but resigned in June 2017. He was dissatisfied after the HDZ broke up with the conservative Bridge party and formed a new coalition with the Croatian People's Party.

Stier and Kovac opposed the ratification of the Istanbul Convention, and voted against its ratification in the Croatian Parliament, despite the conclusion of the HDZ's leadership that the document of the Council of Europe should be supported, ahead of the six-month Croatian presidency which began on May 17.
