ZAGREB, June 5 (Xinhua) -- In the first five months of 2018, almost 20 percent more tourists have visited Croatia compared to the same period last year, the Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ) announced on Tuesday.

According to statistics which contain the tourist traffic recorded in commercial and non-commercial facilities and the nautical charter, there were 3.6 million arrivals (19 percent increase) and 11.6 overnight stays (24 percent increase) from January to May this year, said HTZ's press release.

"Croatian tourism has achieved a growth of over 35 percent of tourist traffic over the period of two years. I believe that these results will have a positive impact on the continued growth of tourism revenues and motivate us all to keep up building the success of Croatian tourism," Minister of Tourism Gari Capelli said.

In May, there were 30 percent more arrivals and 39 percent of overnight stays compared to the May 2017. The most overnight stays were recorded on the Croatian coast -- in Istria, Dalmatia and Dubrovnik.

Most tourists who visited Croatia this year came from Germany, Austria and Slovenia, according to the HTZ.
