RIO DE JANEIRO, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's federal police on Wednesday requested the disclosure of the phone records of President Michel Temer and two members of his cabinet.
The request for the phone records of Temer, presidential Chief of Staff Eliseu Padilha and Minister of Mines and Energy Moreira Franco is part of an investigation of the "Operation Car Wash" corruption probe, which has uncovered numerous illegal dealings, bribery and embezzlement in the Brazilian government.
The presidential office said it will not comment on the request, which was presented to Supreme Court Justice Edson Fachin.
The police investigation is related to the three politicians' alleged wrongdoing in a bribery scheme involving construction company Odebrecht and the civil aviation secretariat in 2014. Temer was vice president at that time.
Former Odebrecht executive Claudio Melo Filho told the police that he had a meeting with Temer in his official residence, in which the president asked for a 10 million reals (2.6 million U.S. dollars) bribe from the company in exchange for a favorable attitude toward it in contracts.
In the past, Temer had admitted to having a meeting with Melo Filho, but denied any requests for money.
It is not the first time President Temer is investigated by the "Operation Car Wash." Earlier this year, the police had requested his bank records, to which Temer expressed outrage and said he would disclose his bank statements to the press himself. But he then backed off and did not release any of the documents.
