SEOUL, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Foreign luxury car sales continued to rise in South Korea, posting a double-digit increase last month, industry data showed Thursday.
The number of imported vehicles registered here was 23,470 in May, up 21.1 percent from a year earlier, according to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA).
During the January-May period, registered foreign luxury vehicles advanced 23.7 percent to 116,798 units compared with the same period of last year.
Strong demand for European models continued. The number of European cars sold here was 18,113 in May, taking up 77.2 percent of the total. It was followed by Japanese and U.S. cars with market shares of 15.7 percent and 7.1 percent, respectively.
German luxury automaker Mercedes Benz topped the post with 5,839 vehicles sold here in May. German carmaker BMW came next with 5,222 units sold, followed by Volkswagen with 2,194 vehicles and Japanese carmaker Toyota with 1,455 vehicles sold last month.
