NEW DELHI, June 7 (Xinhua) -- A notorious gangster was sentenced to seven years in jail on Thursday by a court in the Indian capital for demanding protection money from a Delhi-based businessman in 2002.
"The court handed down the punishment after convicting gangster Abu Salem in the extortion case on May 26," a lawyer told the media.
Salem was extradited from Portugal 13 years ago. He is already serving a life term for his role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case in which 257 people were killed. The gangster was then part of the underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's gang. He had fled to Portugal soon after the Mumbai bombings.
The 50-year-old gangster was extradited from Portugal in 2005, where he had been hiding with his girlfriend and Bollywood actress Monika, after a long legal battle on the condition that he would not be executed if convicted in India.
Salem has been lodged in a prison in Mumbai since his extradition from Portugal. Several other cases are pending against him.
