Wildfire breaks out in southern New Mexico, evacuation orders in effect

HOUSTON, June 7 (Xinhua) -- A fast-moving wildfire broke out Thursday and has burned more than 160 hectares on the Mescalero Reservation, about 330 km south of Santa Fe, the capital city of the U.S. state of New Mexico.

About 100 residents were evacuated and sought shelter at local churches and a nearby community center.

The fire started Thursday afternoon and quickly grew in size. The cause is not known yet, and so far, no injuries have been reported.

According to Mescalero Conservation Department, a team of hotshot crews, six engines, two tankers and one aerial tanker is fighting the fire and a large aerial tanker has been requested.
