BERLIN, June 9 (Xinhua) -- The 10th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art opened to public on Saturday, conducted for the first time by an African curator.

The 10th Berlin Biennale takes "We don't need another hero" as its slogan, which, according to the South African curator Gabi Ngcobo, was borrowed from Tina Turner's song from 1985.

"Like the song, it rejects the desire for a savior. Instead, it explores the political potential of the act of self-preservation, refusing to be seduced by unyielding knowledge systems and historical narratives that contribute to the creation of toxic subjectivities," said the curatorial statement, adding the 10th Berlin Biennale intends to confront the incessant anxieties of the modern time.

Apart from exhibitions of works by artists from over a dozen of countries, there will be public art programs, workshops, projects with and in schools to engage the public during the Biennale.

Taking place every two years since 1998 at varying locations in Berlin, Berlin Biennale promotes experimental formats and strives to present the latest challenging positions. The 10th Berlin Biennale will last from June 9 to Sept. 9, 2018.
